The benefits of an adjustable standing desk at your workplace or your home office are clear. A great many workers nowadays spend a majority of their life in a sitting position. Today’s physical inactivity and sedentary lifestyles are harmful to our health.

Cutting down on the hours you spend sitting during the workday reduces the risk for cardio-vascular diseases and diabetes. Standing expends more energy than sitting. By using a convertible desk you can also easily adjust your work posture to decrease the risk for or avoid altogether unnecessary back and shoulder pain.

Modern computer desks for the home office are height-adjustable, allowing for easy switching between standing and sitting. Multi-functionality and easy moveability from one room to the other are other benefits of the new kind of furniture for the 21st century.

Good ergonomics for the home office by Selkastore

The Finnish Centre for Occupational Safety lists the following suggestions for ergonomic best practices.

Working in a sitting position:

Light:

You should eliminate reflections or glare from the windows or lighting.

Display:

Keep the display at a comfortable distance for your eyesight, straight ahead from you and horizontally below your eye level.

Clean the display regularly.

The mouse and keyboard:

On the same level, right next to each other.

Alternate using both.

Tabletop level:

Elbows at a 90 degree angle.

Enough room for your work materials.

Adjustable height.

Space for your feet:

Feet steadily on the floor or footrest.

No cords at your feet.

Shoulders:

Keep your shoulders relaxed and your neck straight.

Work chair:

Lumbar support

Adjust according to your own body.

Arms:

Your arms should be supported by the tabletop or the chair handrests.

Working in a standing position:

Upper arms:

Upper arms close to your torso, shoulders relaxed, elbows supported at a 90 degree angle.

Display:

The upper level of the display should be kept at eye level.

Comfortable distance for your eyesight.

Desktop:

The height should be adjusted so that you can work with your back straight, shoulders relaxed and elbows on the table.

In standing work, a comfort mat will lessen the pressure on the spine and joints of the lower limbs.

Your stomach should touch the desk top.

Comfortable shoes have solid soles and heels a couple of centimeters (1-2 inches) high.

You should sit from time to time, if you feel your back is getting fatigued.
